This group includes cabbages (spring, round, red, pointed and savoy), sprouts, kale, purple sprouting, cauliflower, broccoli and swede. All of these, with the exception of swede are raised in plugs and planted out. The machine which helps us plant out is called a transplanter. Four people sit on the back and it is pulled along by the tractor, the transplanter cut a groove and the plants roots are dropped in, press wheels firm the soil around the roots. Brassicas suffer from a range of problems including cabbage root fly, a larvae which attacks the roots, club root a bacteria which is rarely seen in organic systems due to the rotation of crops. The main problem for brassicas on the farm is rabbits, who find the tender plants irresistable in the spring, when there is little food reserves around.
