Our carrots are sown in the summer and consequently suffered from the hot June / July this year. Ground is ploughed and an implement called a bed former is used create a soft seed bed, which is important for creating long, straight carrots. Also the bedformer helps the soil drain over the winter, so root bourne diseases are prevented. We grow a range of carrot varieties, picked largely for their flavour, disease resistance and importantly their leaf coverage, as this helps them compete with weeds. Carrots are weeded by a tractor mounted hoe, which kills the weeds between the rows. Weeds that are missed are pulled by hand. We usually begin harvesting in September, this starts by hand, as the roots are still young and fragile, later a machine is used which lifts the carrots and loads them into a trailer.
