French beans (sometimes called pencil podded beans or bobby beans) grow very rapidly which allows them to out compete most weeds. They also suffer from few pests and diseases. One of the key pests, however is bean seed fly which eats the plant at the seedling stage. Small patches are sown at a time to allow a continuous harvest.
