Root crops are harvested with a harvester pulled by a tractor, the machine cuts under the root which then travels up a conveyor, where the soil is separated. The roots are then passed into a trailer pulled by another tractor. The success of the separation of the soil and the vegetables is dependant on the soil condition and weather. Wet weather means the crop is generally harvested by hand. This helps to reduce damage to the structure of the soil. We use a grass clover mix for a year to help repair the damage to the soil. The roots and leaves provide organic matter to be ploughed in the next year as well as providing nitrogen.
