Stick beans are planted out during the spring, producing beans throughout the summer and autumn. The crop requires alot of attention, as 8ft canes are pushed in close to the growing plants and the plants are trained up these canes. The plants have a natural tendancy to spiral up the canes as they have evolved to follow the sun as it moves round during the day. This is true in the southern hemisphere, where the plants originate from, so it looks like they are going the wrong way in this country. Once the sticks are put in, tractor mounted hoes cannot be used to keep the crop clean, so this must be done by hand.
