Ground is prepared slightly differently from carrots and parsnips as the root develops nearer the surface, so we do not bedform to create a deep worked seedbed. We grow a traditional variety that supresses weeds because its leaves are large and grow out sideways, this does however make it harder to cultivate between the rows with a tractor mounted hoe, because leaves are caught in the machine. Swede suffers from cabbage root fly, which bores holes in the root, this damage is limited to the surface and can be trimmed off.
